"The Health 2.0 NYC Chapter meetup group engaged in a lively wordstorm exercise at our last MeetUp session. The topic was patient empowerment, and the objective of the activity was to dimensionalize the phrase that has come to define the Health 2.0 movement.
The representation of physicians, developers, marketers and entrepreneurs at our meeting was ideal for this exercise. Lynn Nezin, from White Space Healthcare Marketing, facilitated the wordstorming. We began by identifying emotions associated with typical medical office encounters. In general, people in the patient role experience discontent and anger at the wait time, discomfort with lack of information and knowledge, and distress at not being heard or appreciated. An aspirational view of the medical office encounter would be an environment in which people felt appreciated, involved and respected. The empowered patient would be informed, engaged, proactive, and responsible and would expect to find similar qualities in the healthcare provider.
One of the most productive parts of the exercise involved re-naming the physician/patient relationship. The group felt that the term “patient” is associated with passivity, and reactivity, and is at odds with the vision of the Health 2.0 transactional landscape. One suggestion was patient-healthcare provider partnership, and this was attractive because it suggests a more equitable balance of power, and would be a departure from the more traditional, paternalistic dyad, in which patients tend to be relatively passive recipients of medical guidance, advice and dictums. A member of the group from the finance sector suggested re-naming patients as clients, the term used by bankers and lawyers, as well as many practitioners working in the mental health services. This resonated well with the group because a client’s personal time is valuable, and practitioners are dedicated to providing services that their clients deem valuable. It has the potential to help shift healthcare discussions out of the realm of didactic lecturing to more interactive problem-solving.
We look forward to further refinements of the language of Health 2.0 as the group identifies concrete activities, projects, and business ventures that will help advance this movement."
First of all, I wanted to quickly announce that our meetup's membership has almost reached 200. This is a great milestone in such a short time. I am also well aware that quantity does not mean quality but I am happy to state that the caliber of people that have been attending our meetup is phenomenal. Thank you all for spreading the word, for your participation and lively discussions - it is your Health 2.0 NYC Chapter!!!
Call to Action
In order to make this Chapter productive and make the most impact please participate in the following 2 polls:
Poll #1 - Do you like the current meetup format (1. networking, 2 presentations, 3 activity)? Poll #2 - Would you be interested in joining a sub-group of this metup (we had suggestions to become active in public policy, to build prototypes, to bring more venture-focused organizations in etc)?
Brief Recap of May 7th Health 2.0 NYC Chapter Meetup
We were supposed to have 3 presenters (a) Phreesia (b) Halo Monitoring (c) DrChrono DrChrono could not make it but for a very good reason - they got mentioned on Marketplace (NPR) as a healthcare stimulus play and their phone has been ringing off the hook. We are obviously more forgiving then the press! Good luck guys and hope to see your product soon.
Phreesia Presentation Phreesia did an excellent job taking us through the business value, patient value and the technology of the product. Thank you Scott and Michael - well coordinated navigation :)
All, please provide constructive feedback to the Phreesia team here
Halo Monitoring Presentation Halo Monitoring is a consumer healthcare company focused on serving independently living seniors. It is "I am falling and I can't get up 2.0" :) - but I see other significant uses for their technology for proactive treatments
I rushed Chirag through some of the technical details but everyone seemed impressed with the technology and its application as it pertains to their target market.
Given the presentation time constraints, Chirag was kind enough to post his slides for us to review in more detail Please provide feedback to Chirag here
What is Patient Empowerment?
Lynn Nezin did a wonderful job running our brainstorming session on Patient Empowerment and she will be posting a summary of our discussion separately as well as next actionable steps.

Once again I want to thank MultiView/PRNewswire for accommodating our conference room needs on such a short notice. You guys saved the day but I do hope we outgrow that room very quickly!
The Health 2.0 NYC Meetup was a great success. Many dynamic individuals showed up that are passionate about healthcare!. Representatives from Phreesia, Rareshare.org, HealthWorldWeb.com, DrChrono.com are just an example.
First half hour was supposed to be a networking session but this group dove right into passionate conversations:
(1) Twitter, twitter, twitter - I feel like i hear that word at every water cooler (HBO please come out with another hit show)
(2) 23andme - I broke out my newly received kit. Some interesting conversations around it as I presented putting my genome out there in the pseudo-public
(3) We spend a lot of time around privacy. Do you want your work to know about your chronic disease, your friends, would you twitter, would you trust Google Health or Microsoft Vault with your data? wow - it was a fun one!
(4) Health 2.0 Startups got their turn with just a few minutes to say what they do and how they do it :)
(5) All around introductions!!!
(6) Doctor Reviews - Zagat/Wellpoint discussion. Doctor Reviews in the cloud - combined 30+ rating sites sharing same data bank. I introduced the concept at the HealthCampPhila last weekend. Seemed like there was warm reception once again tonight.
(7) Hospitals and Twitter as well as a good discussion around Sherman Health #sherman
Somewhere in the middle I was able to actually stop the flow of conversations to give a bit of an introduction!!!! Check out a quick snapshot of it (~2min) on YouTube
I encourage you all to keep the momentum going. This is YOUR meetup!!! Spread the word, post the "actionable" items that we will vote on next time and see it through as the Health 2.0 NYC Members and Patient Advocates
If you would like to present please contact me with the topic.
First of all I have to thank MultiView/PRNewswire for coming through last minute with a conference room to host us tonight. The agility that I saw from Laurie was unbelievable!
Secondly, please bring an ID card with you since there IS a list at security - otherwise you will not be able to get in.
