We are geared for yet another great meetup so RSVP quickly :) Our agenda will be a bit different this time around with only one company actually presenting their service - ZocDoc.
ZocDoc has been around since 2007 and started making a difference for consumers right form the start. They kicked off the service starting with NYC. Karsten Vagner, Director of Communications, will present the platform, but also talk about their recent expansion to the West Coast. Last meetup we briefly touched on the 576 page document from ONC and meaningful use, so the rest of the time we will spend on this topic. I could not think of anyone better to lead this discussion but Paul Roemer, managing partner of of the consulting firm Healthcare IT Strategy, based just outside of Philadelphia. His company's focus is helping large health care providers solve business problems by aligning their healthcare IT strategy around reform, EHR and Meaningful use. They assess EHRs, workflow improvement, and change management. Paul's focus is heath care transformation and problem resolution using a range of tools including; IT, strategy and solutions management. The AMA wrote about Paul that he is a person to watch, someone who is shaping the discussion about how to transform the business model of healthcare. Paul has a record of leveraging leadership expertise in P&L management, international business development, process reengineering, customer relationships and strategy design/execution to drive dynamic gains in revenue, profit, and performance in startup and mature environments. He has built three profitable consulting organizations, two for the Big 8, and have had his own firm for 14 years. He is a graduate of the Owen School at Vanderbilt University. As you can imagine, we are very excited for Paul to lead a session around the topic that is near and dear to us all. Agenda for February Meetup: 6:30 - 7:00pm Networking (Some healthy snacks and drinks) 7:00 - 7:20pm ZocDoc - Karten Vagner, Director of Communications 7:20 - 8:00pm Paul Roemer, Managing Partner, Healthcare IT Strategy I am sure that we will run longer then 8 :) See you in a few weeks Thanks |

| Once again, we had a great turnout on a cold January day where 40+ of you gathered at PRNewswire offices to welcome the New Year and discuss the topics that are so important to us all as healthcare consumers.
First of all I would like to thank PRNewswire for continuing their support and sponsorship of our meetup in 2010. If you have any press release needs please contact Laurie (Laurie.Wheeler at multiview.com). Secondly, I would like to welcome Shauna to a role of a medical advisor for this growing group. Shauna, has actually been with us since we had 4 people in a small conference room by Penn Station and always provides us with valuable feedback with an eye of a clinician. Shauna is an up -to-date Family Physician for over 10 years in the UK National Health Service where Primary Care is focused on preventive medicine and wellness, with GPs forming the foundation of Medical Professionals, serving the role of Gatekeeper. Routine work involves patient-centered care, practicing evidence-based medicine, empowering patients to be actively and jointly involved in their health and wellbeing, and consciously apportioning the resources of the Govt. She is a Royal College Member, her Consultation skills and keen interest on clinical excellence, aiming for best outcomes for health and holistic approach to clinical practice allows her insights and experience to contribute to our Group on every level (as she has been for over a year)
January's meetup topic was "enabling better care by enabling clinical staff". Our healthcare system is swarming with inefficiencies, high costs and lack of transparency. While we are (or should be) the stewards of our own health, the clinical staff needs some help.
Our first presenter, Matthew Browning, who was a sponsor for HealthCampNYC, is a passionate and vocal person. His company YourNurseIsOn is completely focused on inefficiencies that exist in nurse scheduling. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, he saw a gap and a need to solve it. We captured a short clip of Matthew and you can review his slides below.
I had an MRI done just a few weeks ago - no worries - i will live! :) And as an engaged patient, I ran downstairs to request my images and in <30 min I had it, but boy would I love to get the images somewhere in the cloud for other radiologists to read it and collaborate together. Francisco & Chris from OmniPACS provide just that. While their main target market are radiology departments and not individual consumers, they are offering a piece of software - OmniPACS router that sits in the office but the rest is hands off. Instead of maintaining all the infrastructure and the headaches that come with it, OmniPACS provides all that in the cloud.
Our wonderful Lynn Nezin lead a session on healthcare resolutions for 2010. She did a great job bundling your contributions into the below slides. See you all next month. Agenda and speakers to be announced soon |

I use LoseIT and I am not ashamed of it :), but I also have a slew of other apps that I started and stopped using and when I stopped - my data was left hostage (unless I wanted to re-enter all of it again). With proliferation (see a list of 100 iPhone apps for Health & Fitness) and increased usage of mobile health applications - we, as consumers, are creating an abundance of self-reported and useful data. There is also Nike, Garmin, and now Adidas joining the family (http://bit.ly/6nFZRE) of devices to track distance, heart-rate and much more. For some people this self-tracking is motivational, for others a hobby and I am sure there is a whole spectrum of reasons that drive us to use this wide array of tools. (What is yours??) The problem, as I alluded to before, is that it is all tracked in complete siloes with a goal of engaging captivity (while providing immediate satisfaction of pretty charts and graphs). As an engaged patient I already have my claims records housed at my HealthPlan’s website, I already have my medication history at a PBM and I am already self reporting additional meds, allergies and other info at sites like Keas & Google Health. I just ordered WakeMate to keep track of my sleep cycles. I paid $399 for a spit-kit for 23andme and loving every moment of it. I already collected copies of all my doctor’s notes. I forced my PCP to allow me access to Quest Diagnostics through Google Health. This is all data, valuable data, valuable to me and valuable to my team of physicians. This is a full 360 degree view into the Eugene ecosystem. But this post is not about integrating all this data into a single view - the nirvana of the engaged patient, this post is only about solving a slice of the overall problem. I want to be able to transfer my self-reported data such as weight, calories burnt, food eaten anywere and everywhere. I want to share it, and not in any unstructured manner like looseit’s twitter posts, but graph my data across mutliple inputs. Maye I don’t want to invite my friends to join LoseIT - maybe they are all on SparkPeople :) I want to share my data just not necessarily at the point of input. In order to explore the possibilities of self reported structured data we need data portability! So how do we standardize on this? What standards are on their way, if any? Is an aggregation business model feasible, as a cloud-based service to the slew of “input” devices? Let these apps compete on usability and value added services and outsource the “logging” of data into the cloud. In order to explore the possibilities of self reported structured data we need it to be portable. Thoughts? |

Happy New Year everyone! We are looking forward to a great 2010 - this is YOUR meetup so please speak up and contact myself of Lynn with any suggestions for topics, presenters or improvements in how the meetups are organized. As usual, I want to thank PRNewswire for continuing to sponsor us in the year ahead! As most of you have seen, ONC has published "interim final" rules for meaningful use. By 2015, according to the ruling, we will start focusing on "patient access to self management tools, access to comprehensive patient data and improving population health". Next few years will be exciting times for the healthcare ecosystem and our meetup is in the epicenter of these discussions so RSVP now. January meetup is dedicated to " enabling better care by enabling clinical staff" and we have just the presenters for that so RSVP now. January 2010 Presenters: 1. YourNurseIsOn - Matthew Browning, CEO Your Nurse Is On was developed in 2000 by a trained Family Nurse Practitioner in response to the inefficient relief staffing procedures found in healthcare today. With today's challenging environment of cost savings and instant communications it became apparent that calling replacement staff one at a time was no longer an adequate solution. 2. OmniPACS - Chris Chua, Founder and Managing Director OmniPACS® empowers Healthcare professionals to share bio-imaging data in a way that is practical, safe, and easy to use. OmniPACS Inc. provides all of the services and system infrastructure necessary to conduct professional diagnostics and consultation, allowing Healthcare providers and consumers to harness the power of “Cloud Computing.” Agenda for January Meetup: 6:30 - 7:00pm Networking (Some healthy snacks and drinks) 7:00 - 7:30pm Demos & Group Q&A 7:30 - 8:00pm 2010 Healthcare resolutions See you all next Wednesday and dont forget to RSVP now. |
