Healthcare and Social Media - Connubial Bliss or Collision Course?

Sign-up for our meetup

Well, you asked for it, the Social Media in Healthcare Panel Discussion is here!

We have assembled an all star group of presenters for the first Meetup / Tweetup dedicated to social media in Healthcare. The goal of the meetup is to look at the current state of healthcare social media utilization and explore the possible future changes that could or should become reality.

Our Panelists include two successful HCSM-using Twitter-Docs, two CEOs of Healthcare Social Media enterprises, a HCSM researcher, one HCSM Writer, and THE Esther Dyson. We are still trying to get a hospital SM Panelist but apparently they are in short supply.

Thank you for your suggestions and support - especially Lynn Nezin, Micheal Monson, Laurie Wheeler, Katerina Jackson, and Mark Amares.

Agenda for July Meetup:
6:30 - 7:00 PM - Meet, Greet, & Tweet (w/some healthy snacks and drinks)
7:00 - 7:30 PM - Presentation by Amir Kishon, Ph.D., CEO, Wellness Layers
7:30 - 8:30 PM - Healthcare and Social Media Discussion Panel

Panelists
HCSM Physician - Jen Dyer, MD, MPH aka @EndoGoddess
HCSM Physician - Arthur Lubitz, MD, aka @NYCAllergyDr
HCSM Consultant and CEO – Dr Amir Kishon, Ph.D., CEO, Wellness Layers

HCSM Researcher, CEO, & Investor - Aafia Chaudhry MD, Founder & CEO JuvoLab
HCSM Patient Advocate Leader: Jack Barrette, Founder & CEO WEGO Health
HCSM Hospital Leader: Pending acceptance - NY area large hospital VP
HCSM Thought Leader: Esther Dyson, named by Forbes magazine as one of the most powerful women in American business, is widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in technology—but she's not a programmeror high-tech executive, and doesn't even have a phone at home. She started out as a magazine fact checker, but ended up managing her own venture capital fund. She has rarely, if ever, voted, but she's an active technology policymaker in Washington. Read more of her bio at Forbes.com.

We also are happy to introduce our Moderator:
Anne Zeiger, President, NextHealth.

Questions will be taken from the audience but also please submit questions for our esteemed guests to discuss.

Please feel welcome to answer these questions yourself on the discussion board as well.

Here is a preliminary list:

1. How does Social Media change the provider or medical center / patient relationship? Give one positive and one negative example.
2. Providers: Why do you practice #HCSM? What aspects do you avoid?
3. Providers: How do you handle the increased access your patients may have to you?
4. Social Media breaks down the privacy barriers for both patients and Providers. Where are the possible areas to utilize #HCSM without increasing exposure for patients and providers? What would you change if you could?
5. Has the increased access and communication #HCSM bring improved the health of your patients or clients while reducing office visits?
6. What should be our goals for #HCSM for the next six months?
7. Who is doing #HCSM right and why.

We hope all can make it but the room can only hold about 100 (updated from 60) so RSVP early and make sure you give up your spot if there is a change in plans.

We hope you are having a great summer so far and we look forward to seeing everyone!

Health 2.0 NYC Chapter February Recap PDF Print E-mail

Dear Health 2.0 NYC Members,

I apologize for such a delayed recap of the February meetup. But before I go onto the actual recap, I want t thank everyone for contributing ideas for the next meetups and voting on the topics of interest. As Lynn and I always say - it is your group so the influence and feedback we get drives the unprecedented (IMHO) discussionsand the success of our meetup.

Here are the top 3 ideas so please visit the meetup site to add and / or vote

Personal Health and Wellness Management

Social Media in healthcare

Leading Edge technology in healthcare?

Quick Recap

We tried Ustream.tv to extend our meetup virtually - each one will be embedded below individually but you can go to our Heath 2.0 NYC Show page to view them all at once.

ZocDoc @ Health 2.0 NYC Chapter

Karsten from ZocDoc seems to carry the same passion and enthusiasm as the founder (Cyrus) himself. ZocDoc is going strong with a very recent expansion to the West Coast and are actively hiring (for those who are looking please contact him on Twitter @KarstenV )

Almost 8 months ago, Health 2.0 Meetup hosted an ideation session on "Office Visit Dimensions" to identify the gaps that are seen by consumers as it pertains to their expereinces before, at and after the doctor's visit.

ZocDoc solves some of these problems and while they have the capacity to expand the feature set, the are treading wisely to focus on what they do best.

Meaningful Use, to Use or not to Use

People say that LinkedIn & Facebook are for people you know, Twitter is for people you want to know....  I started following @paulroemer on twitter and was immediately impressed by his wisdom in the #EHR, #EMR space, so when I asked him to speak on meaningful use and what this means to the healthcare ecosystem he immediately said yes. Paul came all the way from Pennsylvania, where he is a managing director for Healthcare IT Strategy. I am also happy to say that we inspired him and he now has a local Health 2.0 PA Chapter on meetup

Paul is a knowledgeable, dynamic, entertaining presenter that is not afraid to challenge the status qoe and hence we spent almost an hour between his presentation and the Q&A session. I almost felt bad doing a time check.

His slides and the presentations are below and please feel free to contact him if you need him at @paulroemer

Thank you all again for your participation and see you in a few weeks. Agenda TBD but we will try to get presenters to match the ideas that you all submitted.

Thanks again

We are geared for yet another great meetup so RSVP quickly :)
Our agenda will be a bit different this time around with only one company actually presenting their service - ZocDoc.

ZocDoc

ZocDoc has been around since 2007 and started making a difference for consumers right form the start. They kicked off the service starting with NYC. Karsten Vagner, Director of Communications, will present the platform, but also talk about their recent expansion to the West Coast.

Last meetup we briefly touched on the 576 page document from ONC and meaningful use, so the rest of the time we will spend on this topic. I could not think of anyone better to lead this discussion but Paul Roemer, managing partner of of the consulting firm Healthcare IT Strategy, based just outside of Philadelphia. His company's focus is helping large health care providers solve business problems by aligning their healthcare IT strategy around reform, EHR and Meaningful use. They assess EHRs, workflow improvement, and change management. Paul's focus is heath care transformation and problem resolution using a range of tools including; IT, strategy and solutions management. The AMA wrote about Paul that he is a person to watch, someone who is shaping the discussion about how to transform the business model of healthcare. Paul has a record of leveraging leadership expertise in P&L management, international business development, process reengineering, customer relationships and strategy design/execution to drive dynamic gains in revenue, profit, and performance in startup and mature environments. He has built three profitable consulting organizations, two for the Big 8, and have had his own firm for 14 years. He is a graduate of the Owen School at Vanderbilt University.

As you can imagine, we are very excited for Paul to lead a session around the topic that is near and dear to us all.

Agenda for February Meetup:
6:30 - 7:00pm Networking (Some healthy snacks and drinks)
7:00 - 7:20pm ZocDoc - Karten Vagner, Director of Communications
7:20 - 8:00pm Paul Roemer, Managing Partner, Healthcare IT Strategy

I am sure that we will run longer then 8 :)

See you in a few weeks

Thanks

Health 2.0 NYC Chapter January 2010 Meetup Recap PDF Print E-mail

Once again, we had a great turnout on a cold January day where 40+ of you gathered at PRNewswire

offices to welcome the New Year and discuss the topics that are so important to us all as healthcare consumers.

First of all I would like to thank PRNewswire for continuing their support and sponsorship of our meetup in 2010. If you have any press release needs please contact Laurie (Laurie.Wheeler at multiview.com).

Secondly, I would like to welcome Shauna to a role of a medical advisor for this growing group. Shauna, has actually been with us since we had 4 people in a small conference room by Penn Station and always provides us with valuable feedback with an eye of a clinician.

Shauna is an up -to-date Family Physician for over 10 years in the UK National Health Service where Primary Care is focused on preventive medicine and wellness, with GPs forming the foundation of Medical Professionals, serving the role of Gatekeeper.
Routine work involves patient-centered care, practicing evidence-based medicine, empowering patients to be actively and jointly involved in their health and wellbeing, and consciously apportioning the resources of the Govt. She is a Royal College Member, her Consultation skills and keen interest on clinical excellence, aiming for best outcomes for health and holistic approach to clinical practice allows her insights and experience to contribute to our Group on every level (as she has been for over a year)

January's meetup topic was "enabling better care by enabling clinical staff". Our healthcare system is swarming with inefficiencies, high costs and lack of transparency. While we are (or should be) the stewards of our own health, the clinical staff needs some help.

YourNurseIsOn

Our first presenter, Matthew Browning, who was a sponsor for HealthCampNYC, is a passionate and vocal person. His company YourNurseIsOn is completely focused on inefficiencies that exist in nurse scheduling. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, he saw a gap and a need to solve it.

We captured a short clip of Matthew and you can review his slides below.

OmniPACS

I had an MRI done just a few weeks ago - no worries - i will live! :) And as an engaged patient, I ran downstairs to request my images and in <30 min I had it, but boy would I love to get the images somewhere in the cloud for other radiologists to read it and collaborate together. Francisco & Chris from OmniPACS provide just that. While their main target market are radiology departments and not individual consumers, they are offering a piece of software - OmniPACS router that sits in the office but the rest is hands off. Instead of maintaining all the infrastructure and the headaches that come with it, OmniPACS provides all that in the cloud.

.
Our wonderful Lynn Nezin lead a session on healthcare resolutions for 2010. She did a great job bundling your contributions into the below slides.

See you all next month. Agenda and speakers to be announced soon

Self-reported health data portability PDF Print E-mail
Written by Eugene Borukhovich
Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:34

I use LoseIT and I am not ashamed of it :), but I also have a slew of other apps that I started and stopped using and when I stopped - my data was left hostage (unless I wanted to re-enter all of it again).

With proliferation (see a list of 100 iPhone apps for Health & Fitness) and increased usage of mobile health applications - we, as consumers, are creating an abundance of self-reported and useful data. There is also Nike, Garmin, and now Adidas joining the family (http://bit.ly/6nFZRE) of devices to track distance, heart-rate and much more. For some people this self-tracking is motivational, for others a hobby and I am sure there is a whole spectrum of reasons that drive us to use this wide array of tools. (What is yours??)

The problem, as I alluded to before, is that it is all tracked in complete siloes with a goal of engaging captivity (while providing immediate satisfaction of pretty charts and graphs).

As an engaged patient I already have my claims records housed at my HealthPlan’s website, I already have my medication history at a PBM  and I am already self reporting additional meds, allergies and other info at sites like Keas & Google Health. I just ordered WakeMate to keep track of my sleep cycles. I paid $399 for a spit-kit for 23andme and loving every moment of it. I already collected copies of all my doctor’s notes. I forced my PCP to allow me access to Quest Diagnostics through Google Health. This is all data, valuable data, valuable to me and valuable to my team of physicians. This is a full 360 degree view into the Eugene ecosystem. But this post is not about integrating all this data into a single view - the nirvana of the engaged patient, this post is only about solving a slice of the overall problem.

I want to be able to transfer my self-reported data such as weight, calories burnt, food eaten anywere and everywhere. I want to share it, and not in any unstructured manner like looseit’s twitter posts, but graph my data across mutliple inputs. Maye I don’t want to invite my friends to join LoseIT - maybe they are all on SparkPeople :) I want to share my data just not necessarily at the point of input. In order to explore the possibilities of self reported structured data we need data portability!

So how do we standardize on this? What standards are on their way, if any? Is an aggregation business model feasible, as a cloud-based service to the slew of “input” devices? Let these apps compete on usability and value added services and outsource the “logging” of data into the cloud.

In order to explore the possibilities of self reported structured data we need it to be portable. Thoughts?
